upgrade advice

after upgrading just about everything on my home computer i have decided the motherboard and processor are the next for the chop.
can i boot windows xp from my old hard drive or do i have to do a complete new install from cd.
i dont want to reinstall all my programs etc from scratch but will resort to the best solution.

Often a matter of luck and opinion; some say a clean install is the only way forward, others say that you can simply boot from the old hard drive and then install motherboard drivers as you find necessary.

Personally a clean install is always my preference.

that'll do for me thanks
