updating excel spread sheets from 2003 to 2013

I am sure I am worrying over nothing but I have very sizeable and important excel spread sheet databases with hyperlinks to photos which were put together with Excel 2003. I have just purchased Office 2013 and am about to install it. Please advise: Do the spreadsheets automatically change to the 2013 format when I download the programme or are they individually changed to the 2013 format as and when I edit something on the spread sheet and save. I am just very nervous that I lose a lot of info and/or my hyperlinks. Your assurance would be appreciated

Well you'll have made backups, of course.

Open in 2013 (you may get asked what you want to do with 2003 file)

Make a minor change to one cell, then Undo or manually put it right.

Click Save and see what it says. Click Save As and see too (note the dropdown box for old versions. It will allow you to keep as old version if you want).

Close Excel and re-open with same file. Check it all seems to work, formatting and printing is OK).

When you are happy, embark on lengthier editing sessions.
