have just visited a site called Pitstop and had my pc scanned for out of date drivers by Driveragent. how safe is it to just go ahead and download updates.
Should i be backing up and if so how?

If you are running on XP, it backs up drivers. But I would suggest you also create a Restore point before loading them. You can revert driver in Device Manager if they do not work as should

Is this one of those US type "Pay for" updates?

You can go to the manufacturers' websites and obtain them free quite easily or visit click here or click here both of which are updated as and when necessary daily.

I don't update drivers if the ones I have got are working ok.
