I just got a prompt to download a security update
from Windows Update. How do I know if its genuine
& how can I tell which updates are really applicable to me for MY PC ? I'm new to WindowsXP
having bought a new PC last month with it installed..(Home edition). Thanks. p.s. The update is about a Windows malicious software rem-
oval tool.

Visit the M$ Win Update site, the malicious software tool is a genuine M$ update.

ok, thx for the helpful info. How do I know about
other prompts of this kind I may receive,if they're genuine Microsoft updates & if I really
need them ? Thx.

M$ do not email you to inform you of updates.Only download from M$ site, nowhere else.As to "if you really need them" these updates are to patch flaws that are being discovered frequently in XP,without them your leaving your PC open to all manner of "hacks".
