What is Updater? Do I need it? Why does it want to connect?

  Big Elf 21:37 03 Jan 04

Is it the Window Update? If so it's trying to connect to MS to check for updates. If that's what it is you can switch it off in Control Panel, System, Automatic Updates. If you do it's still a good idea to check for updates on a regular basis.

No, I found it under MSCONFIG whilst looking for programs that make my computer want to connect. It will not uncheck!

Where in Control Panel is it, please? Under which tab??

  Big Elf 21:50 03 Jan 04

Is it called 'Automatic Updates' and is it listed under the 'Services' tab?

If not then try downloading and running the following:

Spybot click here

AdAware click here

Also ensure your Anti virus definitions are up to date and run a virus check.

Sorry didn't refresh before last post.

Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Automatic Updates and take the tick out of the 'Keep my computer...' box.

Sorry about this. Under System I have 4 tabs, General, Device Manager, Hardware Profiles and Performance. Which one should I be looking under, please?
I have Spyware and Ad-aware already thanks.

You using Windows 98 then?

  Big Elf 22:10 03 Jan 04

Ah. I forgot to ask for the version of Windows and typically assumed it was XP.

  Kernow999 06:18 04 Jan 04
