Unwanted Programmes/Spyware How to remove?

Hello.

McAfee AV has found 20 "Unwanted Programmes" after a scan.

It can't remove or disinfect or quarantine any of them. I have tried a scan and tried to remove them in safe mode.

The progs are all assocated with Internet Explorer.

5 of them chosen at random are:

C:\\WINDOWS\bootstat.dat:jzawg
C:\\WINDOWS\DteInstall.log:wjjmg
C:\\WINDOWS\evyzfx.dat:imakt
C:\\WINDOWS\regedit.exe:khgen
C:\\WINDOWS\yluqc.txt.hhoes

This is a second hand PC with Windows XP home, 1.3 Celeron and 256MB RAM. It came with these unwanted files.

These files look like spyware but I don't know, can I/should I remove them? If so how?

Thanks in advance.

or Back up the Registry and delete them. Reboot and run PC as you normally would for a few days to see how it goes

And a free download I found recently XoftSpy click here

In the General Tab you can set it to update itself and the definitions.

"The progs are all assocated with Internet Explorer".

At the moment, Firefox IS a safer browser than Internet Explorer (although even FF has it's problems from time to time). It is, of course, no substitute for a good real time AV prog, a good firewall and a selection of AM progs, but it can be considered as an integral part of a prudent security regime.

when AdAware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster and McAfee AV didn't. I know that McAfee is an anti virus software but it did find the files...

Thanks for the pointer Curio.

Border Collie, I will look at XoftSpy later thanks.

I have tried Firefox but I prefer IE. I do agree that Firefox is faster but with a 2MB connection it doesn't matter. I suspect that it will only be a matter of time before FF gets targetted by virus and script writers.

Thanks again.

I did a scan, both McAfee and A Square, both came up clean.

I then re-booted and did another scan. All 20 files/programmes were back!

I will try XoftSpy but don't hold out much hope. Any more ideas?

Thanks.

I would try a hijackthis log and post it hear and wait for someone who knows what to delete

spear,XoftSpy found one on mine but when I tried to delete it it said 'Pay Up'. Sorry, not so good after all.
