Unwanted operating system

After a friend's laptop refused to start up, we had to run a rescue disk which was not individual to his machine.
As a result, there is now a choice of operating systems on start up.
His original was XP Home, as was the rescue disk.
There are now 2 XP Homes on his laptop, how can we remove the one we do not want?

Is there definiately 2 versions of windows on the drive?

Start - run - type Msconfig - boot.ini tab -checkboot paths.

This will tell you which version is working and you can then use explorer to delete the other version.

Pretty sure, yes.
I've selected both systems at start up, one results in the desktop and files that were present before the problem the other is as if a new XP has been loaded, lovely clean desktop and no files available.
The laptop is not available to do your suggested check, but assuming there are 2, how exactly do I remove it using explorer?

The one that's not being used. In Explorer you should be able to right click the partition that it's on and format it
