unwanted desktop icons

There are a number of unbidden desktop icons on my computer. I have tried to delete them but they keep coming back.
Does anyone have any idea how to permanently delete them? I have tried to delete them from the recycle bin but that only aggravates them and I get double the number of them on the desk top after that operation.

Some serious malware here! What defences have you got (firewall AV spyguard etc)?

Hi everyone. My PC has been possessed by the same devil I have used adaware,Skybot,AOL's own spyware checked for a virus and run two firewalls. The only way I can remove these icons is by carrying out a system restore. Any clues please. Rwild

Why 2 firewalls? Not sure but they may interfere with one another.

CClean, is useful to remove all the clutter.

Spybot is gentle but not 100% effective.

Ad-aware (personal) is much more thorough, but takes longer.

If all these are run in that order, and bang up to date, it may clean you up. If not post back again and some others may take you further among the heavyweight mess-killers!

The original question still stands, I didn't notice that wildfish had added his own troubles!

If it's not giving too much away...

Can you describe the icons and, particularly, the labels?

Might give us a clue what the source is.

Have you tried clicking the icons? What happens if you do?

Have tried thes many times today. I run xp's firewall because that used to protect me from the problem i am getting. which are on line bingo, casino, card games, poker, travel, printer cartridges and web hosting. and i also use m'cafee firewall because its free with AOL and upto now its worked ok.

Thanks for the response re the above.
I shall try out the 'shredder' website and report back
In answer to Chris the Ancient; the icons are as follows
Home mortgages
Adware remover
Online dating
Online pharmacy
Poker
I did click the 'adware remover' icon and it took me to a site which invited me to spend money!!! I have not tried the others and probably wont.

have found that the shredder only closes the IE icons but does not remove them. I have tried the spysubtract programme also but the things keep coming back.
