Unusual desktop

I normally have a usual desktop with all the icons displayed for my programmes etc., but recently it has added itself third of a page of another page which details whether I want to change something or add something else. To be honest its difficult to describe it, but it does cover a third of the desk-top and I dont know how to get rid of it. Has anyone had simliar experience of this, and if so, do you know how to get rid of it as it's confusing me totally. When I re-booted the machine, there it was.

Have you tried a system restore or reboot into safe mode and try "last known good configuration"
