I have been using Win 98SE for a few years and just b4 xmas updated my PC to a Gigabyte GA-7vkmp, AMD XP2000+, 256mb DDR PC2100 ram And DVD, but used my old Maxtor 30Gig 33073h3 H Drive. I tried to update to Win XP but was getting several errors during set-up (unable to copy files) despite several attempts. I then gave up with that and re-installed 98SE, which installed O.K. but started to give errors when booting. I then reformatted the drive and tried XP again, Still no joy. I am now back on 98SE but find I am having to run SFC to restore system files every couple of boots. Any Suggestions (other than dynamite).

First thing I would try would be a thorough scandisk on your hard drive...

Thanks Zaxifone.
Already tried that. I have also Run Maxtors Powermax Diagnostics on the drive and that says its OK. !!!

Have you loaded the drivers that com with your motherboard

  woodchip 21:31 02 Jan 03

Did you format your drive when you fitted the new motherboard????

  Stephen-333842 21:51 02 Jan 03

Brynit and Woodchip

Yes And Yes.

When I first formated the drive I booted from the Win XP CD to install so the drivers whern't there then but subsequently I have tried to upgrade 98 and still no joy.
When I first got the new kit it wouldn't boot but the techs at store diagnosed the memory and exchanged it, and I am wondering if that may have caused some damage to the MB??

"No", If you have two or more stick of ram take them out except for one stick make shure the stick left is in ether slot 1 or 0 you may have to try each stick to find if that's the problem

Steve, what system files are you having to restore? I don't know if this information will help, but it could be that one of them is being overwritten and so could give a clue.
