Unstable PC

System Windows Xp Professional, 1.8Ghz, 512Ram, Radeon 9600Pro Graphics Card 129Mb, 80GB Hard Drive. My PC has become unstable - when I choose to re-start, the PC goes through the start-up sequence in Dos, the Windows logo appears with the pulsating bar - then I hear a double-click and the PC re-starts. This can continue until I pull the plug. However, this morning, after one attempt to re-start, the PC offered me to start in Safe Mode. I accepted, transfered some files from one partition to another, and then I took the option to re-boot. Everything then fired up correctly. Why does the PC hang up on some occasions?
