my pc, pentium 2 WME, was at one time networked with another pc using microsoft networking.
when I boot the pc it still stops at a box demanding a networking password.
how can I avoid this box appearing since it slows down the boot process especially if I am not watching the screen. colcol

If you don't have the network set up go to the Network neighbourhood icon on the desktop - right click it and where you see the login options change it to the Windows logon (the one it isn't at the moment.)

Reboot and you should have the problem sorted.
