Unmovable AVI file in Windows XP

  Graham. 10:37 06 Jan 10

A friend has a file labelled AVI_0070 of about 3GB in My Documents. When she tries to delete, open or do anything with it, error message 'Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'. Then My Documents closes.

I talked her through booting into Safe Mode but My Documents was missing. Her young grandson has added himself as an Administrator. When she logs on as him in Safe Mode, My Documents is missing there also. She is reluctant to delete him as a User as he has a lot of pictures stored.

Is there an obvious solution to this problem?

My friend tried Unlocker, but right-click on the file resulted in Windows Explorer shut-down as before. Unlocker also appeared in Outlook Express, so she has uninstalled it.

I don't want to risk the Registry suggestion over the phone, so will leave that for now.

She is now saving everything she wants to keep, and wishes to do a Repair clean install.

Shame we couldn't get to the bottom of it, though.
