Dell inspiron 1000 xp home.
stop 0x000000ed(0x81ae14e8,0xc000006,......)
Non of the options, safe mode, last know good etc work, either refuse altogether or give a screen full of fast rolling data. The next option is to hit f12 at the dell start screen which goes to a lot of diagnostics. In the main the errors are on hard drive options with typical reports of 0f00:133e/0f00:136c/0244/013e.
The system will not boot from an xp cd
I suspect that the hard drive has failed but I'm only about 95% convinced of this.
Any offers?

You need to rest the BIOS to CD drive as first boot device.(F10 save and exit)

Boot from the XP CD into recovery console and run chkdsk /f

The Hard Drive boot sector is corrupt. If you have a OS CD you can start with that and and Consul C:\ type
