Unmountable Boot Volume

I'm trying to clean install Win XP Pro and keep getting "Unmountable Boot Volume" error.

It's a 40Gb drive which I've partitioned as one large partition in NTFS.

I've installed XP but, when I try to boot from HD, I get the above message.

I can boot into Safe Mode but then can't access the net from my PC.

4 days now and going slightly mad.

TIA

Paul

Thanks VoG, but I've tried those.

I'm just going back into the Recovery Console (if I can!) to try fixmbr.

It turned out be the IDE cable to my HD

It needs to be 80-wire for the higher speed data transfer of NTFS.

It ran fine on FAT 32 on 98SE with a 40-wire, but not on XP.

It does mention it on the Windows Helpline, but I ignored it as it had been working fine previously.

Lesson learnt!
