unmountable boot volume

Please can any one help. I have a laptop with an early version of Windows XP. Suddenly computer boots up but then has error message "unmountable boot volume". On screen advice suggests disabling bios memory options, removing components or software and restarting in Safe Mode. Laptop will not enter safe mode and the error messages comes up again. Thus cannot not make any chances to the system.

Is there anyone who can shed some light on this?
