Microsoft Windows Media Player is not listed in the Add / Remove Progs but Windows Media Encoder 9 Series is listed.

Is this the same thing ?

Do I uninstall this to remove the Media Player and if so will I still be able to use other media players such as Real for example ?

I would suggest that you don't attempt to uninstall WMP. If you don't like it (and I think it's pants), install a good free alternative like click here and set this as your default media player. Many Windows applications are integral parts of the operating system (like Internet Explore) and are best left well alone.

I deleted the WMP folder in Program Files and then ran Regseeker and Ccleaner to clean the registry. It worked.
