Undetected cdrom drive

Hi folks. My PC cannot detect the cdrom drive any more; not even in device manager. It does not read cds any more. It lights up on bootup, taht's all. Can someone tell me what's going on?

Have you checked all the leads and connections are secure?

It could also be that the drive has given up the ghost - new ones are about ?10-?12 now.

My PC did this to me after I updated some burning software. I ended up uninstalling the software, unplugging the CDROM, booting up, removing it from device manager, power down, reconnected, booted OK. The CD-RW was fine, it only affected the CDROM. Being fairly stupid I then reinstalled the update and had to go through the same process again. 8-(

yep my dvd did this when i installed two dvd editing suites they both fight for the right to party..
just un-install them and then install the one you use the most.
