is it worth getting a dual core processor or stick to a single one for mainly gaming?

It's worth it with an eye to the future; there will come a time when more software is optimised to use dual core processors.

what kind of money are you thinking of?

I'd rather have a top notch single core for gaming like one of the athlon64 fx range than have a slower dual core set up.

Sensible folk buy dual-core ready motherboards and wait for the prices to get realistic and the software coders to make use of them. It's fortunate that the CPU producers can utilise existing socket formats for their dual-core designs.
