Unable to start up Windows 98

Windows 98 wont start beyond saying "Windws is now starting your MS-DOS-based system, Micr(R)Win 98. Copyr...1981-99" (nextline) C:\Windows>_"

When I try again I get the same result. Because a new PC is due next week I have just run the Defragmentation prog in DS mode, and hit this brickwall as a result. Obviuosly I am unable to access the help facility & am now using a friends PC to get help.
Can anyone explain to a computer illiterate wrinkly how to get Windows 98 up and running again. Many thanks. Derek

This should really have been placed in the helproom forum, not the networking forum. You could ask the forum editor to transfer it - you'll get more response.
