unable to run chkdsk /f

my defrag tells me to run chkdsk /f but when I type it in the Run box it says unable to do as system is running - do I want to do at startup Y/N. I type Y & Enter but when rebooting nothing happens. Hence I cannot defrag. I am running Windows XP Pro.

Okay - try:

Right click on C:\ local disc in My computer > Tools > Scan Disk aka. Check disc for errors.

thanks Gaz 25, tried thattoo but similar response, 'disk utility needs exclusive rights etc. ...'Do you want to perform check at atartup' or something similar. Same problem I'm afraid. Thanks for response anyway.
