Unable to run applications and exe files

After removing the Swen virus last night I returned to my PC this morning to find I can hardly run anything!
An error message appears saying "windows cannot find....."
I can't run the help files or system restore, or run anything from CD or floppy. In fact anything that's an exe file or application it seems.
I'm surprised I got online!
Any ideas?
I'm running XP.
Cheers,
G.

This is damage to the registry caused by the virus.

Return my e-mail and it'll send you a fix.

Copy and paste the following into a new notepad document

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableRegistryTools"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell\open\command]
@="NOTEPAD.EXE %1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\batfile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\comfile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\piffile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\scrfile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

Then save it as VirusFix.reg

Then double click the file and it'll fix the problems.

You might have to reboot for it to work.

Thanks for that, I'm sure it'll work. Unfortunately I appeared to have wiped the file eazcx.exe which it needs to execute the Virusfix.
Is there anywhere I can get it?

  Jester2K II 12:35 30 Sep 03

This is the virus name - sadly its also "hooked" the registry to stop reg files being merged.

try this.

locate the file regedit.exe

make a copy of it and call the copy eazcx.exe

then run the reg fix.

Then delete eazcx.exe

or are you confident enough to do a little manual registry editing???

  Sparky3327 12:52 30 Sep 03

Did that, but another message comes up "registry editing has been disabled by your administrator"
Will I have to go in? I'm probably up to it but running "regedit" just ends up with the original "Unable to locate" message. How else would I get there?

Try the Swen Removal tool click here

It says it'll fix the registry too...

  Sparky3327 13:04 30 Sep 03

No can do, can't open it either directly or from a floppy. All messages say now is "registry editing disabled by administrator"

  Jester2K II 13:06 30 Sep 03

Go into Safe Mode and then run the reg file i sent you!!!

I did this the other day on another PC and it only took 5 mins to sort.

It was looking so promising until this message came up after I tried to run the Virusfix: "Cannot import showerror: Error opening file. There may be a disk or file system error"

Arrrgggghhh!!

Right if you can run programs then download the following : Registrar Lite click here

Install and run.

The registry is a bit like the file system in Explorer. Folder on the left and reg keys on the right (bit like files)

Copy the following line

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

and paste it into the address bar at the top of Registrar Lite and hit the Go button to the right.

On the right look for a Key called "DisableRegistryTools". Highlight it and delete it.

The copy the following line

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open\command

and paste it into the address bar at the top of Registrar Lite and hit the Go button to the right.

You see and entry called (default)

Right click it and select Properties.

In the VALUE field at the bottom change the contents to

regedit "%1" %*

then click OK.

The file menu, exit.

Then try the VirusFix file.
