Unable to renew IP address

My friend is running Windows XP Professional SP2 but is unable to connect to the internet.

We contacted the ISP, Virgin Media, who were helpful and went through several tests. Eventually, they said the cause was due to the fact that the computer was unable to renew the IP address. We were then referred to Microsoft who were not willing to assist for free as it is an OEM version of Windows. So far, we cannot contact the original retailer.

Any assistance given would be appreciated in a 'For Dummies' style! I've had a quick look at click here which has a large number entries making it difficult to find the relevant one!!
