unable to install usb drivers for itunes or kies

since trying to update ipad to 6.1, iTunes and Kies usb drivers have stopped working. This left the ipad in recovery mode (and because iTunes on the PC won't talk to the Ipad, I had to go an Apple store to get them to reset the ipad)

I have tried reinstall iTunes and Kies but with iTunes, usb drivers do not appear to have been installed and with Kies, I get a message saying the driver is "not valid"

ideas please

PS I am on Windows 8 so MS fixit doesn't work

No idea about your problem, I don't have any Apple product, but if problem on Win 8 try a restore.

tried that, no effect.

seems to be a problem with installing drivers for devices that connect via usb.

the 'Samsung mobile usb composite device' showed up in device manager; I tried to update the driver - it appeared to download but then a message that 'windows encountered an error while attempting to download it' and 'the data is invalid'
