unable to install new software

Windows XP Professional.
When I try to install new software I get a message, "error 1606, could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\Recent\.

Any suggestions on how to solve problem ?

still get same message. Windows installer opens and software installation begins, I then still get message "unable to access network location %USERPROFILE%Recent\".

Have you upgraded from w98se or ME to your present os?

It suggests a few remedies.
