Unable to defrag

  cabledude 19:34 30 Jan 06

Every time I try to start defrag (or analyse) in XP, a window appears stating "defragmentor could not start". I have also tried installing Diskeeper as a workaround but that comes up with "diskeeper could not initialise". I have tried disabling Norton Internet Security and shutting down background processes to no effect....any ideas?!!

i use diskeeper and it works now ok but i use to have to disable the firewall on norton internet security to get it to run

defrag in safe mode

You may need to run SFC /SCANNOW from Run Box with XP CD in comp

Thanks for the inputs, but none of the above cure the problem!! A windows reinstallation may be the only solution once my hard drive grinds to a halt.

Before you go for reinstallation, try some of the ideas here:

It's own defragger may supersede the Windows one

undo the previous clean up. I had a similar problem and had to stop using Regseeker. Hope this helps.

Many thanks to Gongoozler, there is a huge amount of info on the link. The problem for me was the paging file in Virtual memory, it was set to "no paging file", switching to the system managed setting cured it.
