Unable to connect to router alone

I have two computers that are connected via a U.S. Robotics wireless router. Computer 1 (laptop) is able to connect with no problem. Computer 2 (desktop)will only connect if computer 1 is connected. Once computer 2 is connected it will stay connected even if computer 1 is disconnected.
Both computers are connected wirelessly.
Any ideas for this problem?

It could be an IP addressing issue. Are both adapters set to get their IP addresses automatically, set to connect to "Infrastructure" networks and is "Internet Connection Sharing" definitely *NOT* set up on any connections in the laptop's Network Connections folder?
