I need more information if I'm to help. Things like PC specificiation (ie Modem Type, Operating System and Printer Connection Type) would be of help.

Sounds like a problem with USB if modem and printer are both USB?

Thanks terryf
Any ideas what to check at USB ports?

Are you connecting through a USB Hub and/or using a long cable to the printer? Could be the USB hub needs it's own power supply. It's also possible that the printer+modem exceed the bandwidth of the USB connection. Try unplugging all USB devices and then plug in in different orders and allow (any) installation to occur.

Will get someone to check your suggestions

HPS 56mr is a dial-up modem so no USB connection (assuming you are using dial-up internet and not broadband, if you are using BB post the make / model of your BB modem), comments about USB still apply if your PC is lacking a bit of oomph.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I will keep trying.
