unable to boot successfully

Friends' computer starts to open, gets as far as the windows progress meter, goes black then shows a message which says 'power saving enable, monitor will close down' which it does. After a few seconds a screen full of text, appears apologising that windows failed to open and suggests various things which could have caused it, such as installing or changing hard or software, or closing down incorrectly. It also suggest various action to try. Such as 'open in safe mode, open in admin mode, open with the last setting which was successful' and various others. All of these we have tried to no avail.
left to it's own devices it cycles through this contiuously... Help??

Hi bendigo. The 'power saving enable, monitor will close down' message is from the monitor, and is caused by there being no signal from the computer. Your friend may be able to do a repair install of Windows click here, but if this doesn't work, there may be no alternative to a reformat and clean install. If there are important files on the hard drive that will be lost in a reformat, then the drive could be fitted as a slave on another computer, or the same computer with a new hard drive, and the files copied to a safe place.
