Ubuntu DMA Error

I have a very old Time machine (AMD Athlon 1000+ CPU, 326MB RAM, 2x 40GB HDD, 36GB HDD (all IDE), and a DVD-ROM (IDE)). I however, have a problem. When running any hard disk as the master on channel 0, windows me will obviously detect, and boot. It however, only ses the C drive (a segate u5 40gb), and not the D drive. However, the BIOS recognises the D drive as a DVD ROM, and it is set as my boot device. So, when installing ubuntu from live cd, I get the ubuntu loading orange thing, and then after around 5 minutes, the screen goes blank, and tells me that there is a DMA Error on hdh. Nothing else. I am stumped, so am unsure what to do now!
TIA
