currently have vista home premium 64bit sp3 with hd partition into two, C plus D which is a recovery partition, I have downloaded ubuntu to try, it is currently on a DVD, if I want to run it alongside vista is it best to give it it's own partition?

The Ubuntu installation will automatically create its own partition. No need for you to create one prior to running the instal.

Yes, Ubuntu will use the EXT4 filesystem, which is totally different from the NTFS windows uses.
