Two Windows!!

I have 2 hard drives and had to format one. Somehow I have a O/S on both drives now and it gives me the option on boot-up which to go in. I only want Windows on 1 and the other for files etc. But how do I format it? When I click on the drive 'I am not in' and select format it doesn't do anything. Help please!

what os are you using?

XP pro and by the way all my drives are mixed up! One O/S on 'D' and 'F', card reader on 'C', dvd rom 'E' and DVDRW on 'G'!

Invalid Boot paths
The traditional method of removing the invalid entry is to manually edit the boot.ini file, but XP provides an alternative method that eliminates the danger of manual editing by using the System Configuration Utility.

To Remove the Invalid Entry

Click Start > Run

type msconfig and click OK to open System Configuration Utility

Select the tab labeled BOOT.INI

Click the button labeled Check All Boot Paths

A dialog box will open detailing the location of any invalid operating system locations.

Confirm you want to remove the entry and reboot the system.

Now you should beable to format the offending drive.

There isn't a tab called BOOT.INI There is General,SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI. services, startup and tools.

another way is to start disc management using help & suport on the start menu then you can see which drive is which and you can format from there

handyd with your way the format option is greyed out. It does say however 'D' healthy (boot) what I am in now, and 'F' healthy (system) the other hard drive I want to format.

right click my computer > properties > advanced > start up and recovery > settings > edit

Copy and paste here what it says.

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

note pad to read

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

so you just delete the last bit of

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Ok it and reboot.

That should get rid of the boot loader.

When done, come back and someone will talk you through the deletion of the second windows file.

Ok ed-0 thats done. What next please.
