TV as monitor

I've managed to get my DVD drive to play back through my TV after downloading updated drivers etc. from nVidia. As a matter of interest, what should the refresh rate be for a TV, I always though it was 50 or 100hz but the default setting is 60hz on nVidia. Resolution 800 x 600. Should I just leave these settings alone, or can they be improved. The TV is a fairly old 20" Ferguson (Nicam stereo) with only a single SCART socket and no other audio or video connections. My graphics card is a GeForce 5200.
