Turning off external HD?

How do I turn off my external hard drive safely, without losing any data?
I tried using the windows 'safely remove hardware feature' but it informed me 'drive cannot be removed at this time'.
I made sure all files and folders were shut down and then just had to switch off at the mains but I just wondered if this was the norm? Thanks.

I leave my two external drives switched on all the time that the PC is on. I turn off each night - in the mornings I turn on the ext drives first, then the PC - at night I turn off the PC first, then the drives.

Thanks, but I only need to use mine occasionally so I just wondered if it was ok to simply switch off at the mains plug?

Yes, as long as nothing is being read from or written to it, at the time.

Okay, thanks for your help. :-)

As Technotiger says, just make sure you are not writing to or reading from then switch off, I leave mine off all the time except when I need to use it for backups etc.
