Turn one network cable to two?

What is the cheapest way to split a single network cable (preferably for gigabit) between two computers. This is so I can run a single network cable upstairs to share between two computers. I thought you had to use a switch/hub etc. but my friend suggested using a modular duplex adapter. I didn't think you could split a network cable like this as you can with phone lines.
