Biggest performance boost is from adding more RAM.

would fill a book, but there are some basic things you can do to improve/maintain performance:-

1. Add more RAM - this is probably the most effective way to bring about an immediate improvement in your machine's performance. Don't expect to see a huge speed increase, if you already have 512Mb or above, improvements will not be dramatic.

2. Defragment your hard drive on a regular basis. Depending on your working pattern you should check the drive to see if it needs defragmenting about once a month - Windows XP will tell you if it's necessary.

3. Clear out rubbish. Regularly get rid of redundant and temporary files by using the disk cleanup facility. You'll find it if you go to Start>all programs>accessories>system tools.

4. Clean out your mail folders. Your email program has to load everything that's in your inbox, every time to launch it, and over a period of time this will impact on performance. Make sure you have a routine mail archiving or deletion system, and avoid an inbox that's full of old, unwanted messages.

There are all kinds of tweaks that will help performance, but some of them involve delving into the Windows file system - not recommended for a complete beginner.
