WIN98 se, trying to reformat harddrive,
does the checking existing format;
then recording current bad clusters; complete

then says

Not ready
format terminated

what shall i do please

What commands are you running?

start with win startup floppy type at A:\>scandisk C: then press enter when its done run from A:>format C:

Bad news, I'm afraid - this is a typical symptom of a dead drive.

There are a couple of things that I would try before binning it...

Try partitioning the drive from the beginning with a tool like Ranish - click here

If that does not work, try a 'low-level format' utility. This will be available from the drive manufacturer's web site.

Either way, I would not trust the drive, and would be making very regular backups if I ever got it going again :(

I have been simply pressing
format C:

I have tried fdisk but im not sure quite how to do this

I am running scandisk and it seems there are so far 3 bad clusters, I will let it run its course and try and format again.
all the data is backed up so Im not too worried.
Looks like this is going to take a few hours so Ill be on this board tommorow if i need more help.
