troubles formating

when i right click on c drive and try to format i get an error message saying that programs are using the drive and windows can't format it.

what do i do to completely format the drive.

i don't have boot floppys just a windows XP pro disc.

any ideas welcome

Windows won't commit suicide - boot from the XP disc then you can format.

Boot the PC from the XP cd click here

During reisnatalation of xp you get the option to format the drive. click here or use the Recovery Console click here and the Format C: command.
