Trouble formating h/d

W98se. I am putting a new hard drive into a friends pc. After doing fdisk and creating primary partition I went on to format the disk.

At the A promt I typed C:

After typing in format C: the following message comes up Invalid media type reading drive C.

If I type in dir at the prompt I get the same message. But if I type in D:\>dir it shows a list of files.

On boot up it recognises the new drive as primary. Would I be best to go back into fdisk and delete the partition and start again or would I be ok in carrying on with format but with the pc doing it on 'D'
