  musiclady 16:24 11 Feb 05

its a pioneer 106a and it wont read what could be the cause

Is it recognised in the BIOS? In MyComputer?

Will it write DVDs / CDs or read CDs?

Will it read cd's. If so its probably the dvd laser thats gone.

If it's the same problem that I had with mine a few days ago, i.e. It seemed to be completely dead, the eject button didn't work, wasn't showing in 'My computer' or 'Belarc Advisor'. The only thing left I could think of was a cocktail stick in the manual eject hole (or whatever it's called) and Hey presto!

By email wont read dvds but it will read cds.

I had exactly the same problem about a year ago. It has to be the laser. Dvd's have two, one for dvd and one for cd. The fact that it can still read cd's would suggest that the cd laser is still ok. There is no cure I'm afraid. Time to lay it to rest and buy a shiny new one. If you need help installing post back, but its very easy.

Although looking again it says DVD RW / CDR ????, but doesn`t mention DVD reading orburning.

  ventanas 17:10 11 Feb 05

Not sure, that site is a bit obscure. It could be either. It certainly mentions dvd's.

  john-232317 17:14 11 Feb 05

Yeah its strange, but DVD only mentioned in device id, nothing else.

Has it read or burnt DVD`s before ?

  Diodorus Siculus 17:16 11 Feb 05

Ticked and resolved and the mystery remains...
