transferring data between 2 PCs

  JustJohn 10:43 31 Oct 03

I have just replaced an ageing laptop (Windows 98) with a new desktop running Windows XP.
Is there an easy way to transfer files from my laptop to the desktop?
Both PCs have USB connections.

Network them together with a link cable from your local computer store.

Thanks, is this USB to USB ?
Once I've managed to network them is the next step obvious?
Sorry if this is basic but I'm new to XP!

I went for copying all data files to CD then transferring to new XP there is a facility requiring 3 floppies + a wizard floppy to pick up all your favourite settings hwo you like them & transferring that way using XP start: accessoiries: new transfer wizard
Easy peasy this way & your new PC is set up the way you are familiar with

There is a program which is specifically designed for migrating from an old to a new PC. It's called Transfer MyPC and is available on click here. in Europe. It is also sold in a number of big computer superstores.

It is a single-use migration program, that brings across all your settings and stuff, and then can be used as a file transfer between the two machines. I've used it and thought it was great - don't know if anyone else here has...

A nice easy way that I use is a PC-Linq USB-USB cable; this can be obtained from Maplins stores, or a similar product from here

XP drivers are available on the web. I use the PC-Linq all the time, with ME on my notebook, and XP on the PC.

Thanks for all the advice.
I'll go with anchor's PC linq cable as it seems the easiest of the varios methods.
Cheers everyone.
