Transfering 'My Documents' files

I am trying to transfer 'My Documents' files saved in Microsoft Word in XP to my new Vista computer into 'My Documents'. The files have transfered but I can't read them, It's just Gobbletygook
Help will be appreciated.

How did you transfer the files? When I did this with my new PC, I simply used a USB pen drive to copy and paste the files accross.

Silly Question - Do you have MS Word installed on your new computer?
If so , what file format does it use? Create a new document and look at the file extension.

Thanks guys for your suggestions,I see the problem is in the file extension. so I transfered all the 'Word document' files to a USB Stick, then saved them to 'Rich Text' moved them over to the Vista machine and Hey Presto I can read them all.
