Transfering data & settings to a new pc

I have bought a laptop and wish to transfer all my files and settings to it. How do I do this without buying software to help?

Not possible to transfer programs individually and transferring a clone probably won't work because of the differences in hardware between PC and laptop. Files like docs, spreadsheets, tunes could be transferred via CD or DVD or memory stick or ext usb hard drive

When I did this I burnt my files to disc and then copied them on to the new PC. Wrote down my settings and copied them on the new PC. Could also be done with memory stick. Took the opportunity to load only those programs which I really used.

There is a wizard to transfer settings but haven't used it so cannot say how good it is.

For next transfer plan to use a USB link cable with software which comes with it.
