Transfer files xp to vista

Files and settings tranfer wizard. To complete the transfer can I use an standard ethernet cable ? I have seen a crossover cable mentioned is this different? Thanks.

No you can't use the standard ethernet cable, they are different. They look the same and both fit the ports but, to link two pc's together you need the crossover cable and not the ethernet cable.

Files and Settings wizard can be used to transfer files using a crossover cable or slower serial connection not many of these around these days though - it works OK.

But have you considered another way by putting the old hard drive into the new box as a secondary drive and copying files from this to the new one?

Or, if the files aren't too huge, email them to yourself from the old computer and receive them on the new one.
