Transfer Data

Hi All,
My son as a Win XP laptop,and is hoping to get a new one shortly,as the old laptop does not have dvd only cd, copying files to CD is out of the question, what ways can he transfer data from one laptop to the other?. One way I have been reading about is by using a"USB Data Cable" I think that is what they are called,please can anyone advise,if these o.k. (if so can you recomend one, make price ect)

I'm not sure about using a USB Data Cable, but you could use an external hard drive (although these are generally much more expensive than a cable).
