Can someone Help!.

I purchased an external hard drive (Toshiba MK4032GAX) for backup. When I plug into my USB port I cann't find it as a drive. It does show as a USB mass storage device.
I think this needs to be formatted but I'm not sure.....

Any suggestion what I need to do to get this to work so that I can backup some files.
Thanks

My computer - right click - select Manage- storage - disk management - right click your drive - select initialise and then format.

Right click My Computer, click Manage then Computer Management and disk management

Is your external drive listed? If so does it have a drive letter?. If not, right click and assign it a drive letter

I've tried that and I can't see the drive to assign a letter too. The only drives available are c and d. The only way I can see the external drive is if a go to device manager and it is listed as Universal Serial Bus Controller - Mass Storage device.

If I goto explorer, I can't see any drive
