Thunderbird problem

I use Windows XP SP3, Firefox and Thunderbird. Over the past twenty four hours Microsoft has downloaded two lots of updates, and when I went for my email afterwards I found I had not only to put in my password, but that at first it was rejected because my user name had been changed to one I used a long time ago. After I changed to the correct user name I found all my folders and contents of folders have been wiped, which to me is a serious loss. Is there any way this could have been avoided? And is there any way I can access the mail I've lost from the folders?

Thank you for these replies, the 'click here' helped me to resolve the matter quickly. I can't get things back as they were but I can at least read the mail in the folders.
