is there a plug in or something i can download that will alert me of an important email when i start the computer. if not in thunderbird, then some other email application.

It will pop up in the system tray if you have Thunderbird running. But you will not get it to appear without that, or the mail program running in the background. You could put a short cut in the Start Programs\Startup folder on your desktop. So that it will start at boot

how is this done woodchip

By finding the Mail exe file in Windows Explorer, Right click it and drag to the Startup Folder in Programes on the desktop. I use Netscape so I cannot tell you where it is for thunderbird mail

PS look for the mail client icon that may be the one to look for

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe

will be the normal location of the mail program file.
