Thumbnails for media files on external HDD?

So this is increasingly it seems an example of something so ridiculously simple technology wise but still cant be done. I am currently ripping my blu ray disks to external drives and all I wanted was, when connected directly to my 3D home theater system, the files on the drives would show thumbnails of the cover art or a screencap or whatever instead of the usual crappy media icon and title alone.

In an age where everything is going digital I was shocked to see it does not appear to be possible. Am I missing something that makes such a seemingly simple thing impossible in today's tech world? I at least thought there would be a cheap piece of software that would do this. Is Google lying to me? Has anyone found a workaround?

Any insights would be very much appreciated, thank you.
