My mums laptop is an old one and the only USB on it is faulty. We have taken it to the shop for repair, what should we have to pay to put it right and will it be worth it. I have just upgraded the ram for her and spent £50 odd. Any ideas?

I think that will most likely be a system board. Very bad news sorry.

If tha's all that's faulty and the laptop is otherwise working fine then simply install a pcmcia usb card from the likes of click here which is about a tenner delivered. Your Mum's laptop would have to have an available slot.

Obviously I haven't got it here but I doubt it has a pcmcia card slot, isn't it too old to have one? Looks bad news to me too, its the next job on the bench so we will know the worst soon. She would want to replace it, would it be better for her to buy new or go for another secondhand one. She will only want to spend around £200 on an old one.
